The Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art at The Met offers fellowships to support independent research on modern art, covering architecture, design, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, film, and performance from the late 19th century to the 1960s. Fellows engage with the Center’s collections, departments, and libraries while pursuing their own research projects.
Fellowship Format
- Duration: Pre-Doctoral (24 months), Post-Doctoral (12–24 months), Mid-Career (12 months), Non-Residential Doctoral Dissertation Completion (1 year)
- Includes: stipend ($50,000–$70,000 depending on fellowship), $6,000 travel allowance, health insurance supplement, access to Center resources
- Research focus: modern art, global scope
- Residency: on-site, with research travel of up to six weeks possible
Eligibility Criteria
- Pre-Doctoral: enrolled PhD students
- Post-Doctoral: PhD received within past 7 years
- Mid-Career: established scholars with a publication record
- International applicants eligible; must ensure US work authorization
