About the Visual Arts Centre
The Visual Arts Centre (VAC) includes Canada’s largest bilingual independent art school and the McClure Gallery, a dynamic exhibition venue. Since 1946, the VAC has been an integral part of Montreal’s artistic fabric, offering a thriving community of artists, teachers, and students.
Position Summary
The Gallery Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all aspects of exhibition planning and gallery operations. This includes preparing for the exhibition season, organizing shows and special events, and developing educational programming. The Coordinator welcomes visitors, answers public inquiries, and collaborates with the Director on the VAC’s publishing program. The position requires on-site presence during gallery hours, openings, and artist talks.
Qualifications
- Bilingualism required (English and French, spoken and written)
- English required to communicate with Anglophone clientele
- Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Art Education, Museology, or Art History (graduate-level training preferred)
- Minimum 1 year of experience in gallery coordination and grant writing
- Good understanding of the Montreal art scene
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and social media platforms (Instagram, YouTube, Facebook)

Key Responsibilities
- Oversee gallery operations and exhibition preparation, including:
- Contracts
- Exhibition accounting
- Vernissages
- Documentation of exhibitions and events
- Sales and gallery rentals
- Coordination of the annual exhibition selection process
- Coordination of artist talks and art hive
- Grant writing and reporting
- Prepare and manage financial reports
- Coordinate publications and communications:
- Gather texts and images for catalogues
- Manage inventory, sales, and distribution of catalogues
- Maintain and update gallery archives
- Manage partnership agreement with the RCAAQ and its application
- Coordinate gallery social media presence (Facebook, etc.)
Working Conditions
- Temporary full-time contract (6 months) with possibility of extension
- Tuesday to Friday: 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturday: 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.
- Some evening work required for events
- Salary: $26.25/hour
