Salary: $70,000–$75,000 annually
MoMA PS1 is seeking a Registrar – Exhibitions to support the logistical, administrative, and registrarial needs of its ambitious temporary exhibitions program. Reporting to the Senior Registrar, Exhibitions, this role manages complex international and domestic loans, oversees registration budgets, coordinates shipping and installation logistics, and collaborates closely with all museum departments, lenders, artists, conservators, and couriers
The Registrar manages all registrarial logistics for borrowed artworks, including transportation, customs clearance, packing, couriers, and insurance. The role creates and monitors registration budgets, issues and negotiates loan agreements, and develops installation and deinstallation schedules in coordination with Program Production. Responsibilities include condition reporting, art safety procedures, managing storage inventories, tracking insurance values, and maintaining accurate exhibition documentation. The Registrar collaborates with museum departments to implement security protocols and helps manage the museum’s incoming/outgoing shipping schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate packing, transportation, customs clearance, and shipping logistics for loans.
- Develop, manage, and report on registration budgets.
- Issue and negotiate loan agreements with lenders and legal teams.
- Plan installation and deinstallation schedules with Program Production.
- Maintain condition reports and manage all related documentation.
- Implement and communicate art safety protocols across departments.
- Oversee storage inventories, exhibition data, deliveries, insurance values, and COIs.
- Liaise with MoMA CEMS team on template customization for MoMA PS1.
- Guide seasonal installation staff and collaborate with Assistant Installation Manager.
- Work cross-departmentally to support exhibition planning and execution.
Eligibility Criteria
- Minimum 4 years of relevant experience managing complex exhibitions with international and domestic loans.
- Strong knowledge of museum registration practices and fine arts insurance.
- Experience developing and overseeing registration budgets.
- Experience with art handling, transportation logistics, and industry best practices.
- Familiarity with exhibition installation and supervising skilled teams.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills; discretion and diplomacy.
- Proficiency with museum database systems (TMS preferred), Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
- Ability to multitask, meet changing deadlines, and maintain professionalism in a fast-paced environment.
- Availability to respond to art-related incidents outside regular hours.
