The Lise Meitner Group “Decay, Loss, and Conservation in Art History” at the Bibliotheca Hertziana seeks a postdoctoral fellow to conduct an original research project within the Group’s framework. The position is residential in Rome and emphasizes interdisciplinary research spanning art history, technical art history, conservation history, and museum studies.
Fellowship Details
- Funding period: up to 12 months, starting spring 2026.
- Fixed-term contract under German Civil Service Collective Agreement (65% TVöD Bund E 13) or equivalent.
- Residential fellowship in Rome; candidates must take up residence by the start of the fellowship.
- Research budget, desk, and full access to institute facilities including the library.
- Participation in seminars, workshops, visits, and field trips organized by the group.
- Contribution to group publications with editorial and image licensing support.
Eligibility Criteria / Profile
- PhD in art history, technical art history, conservation history, museum studies, or related fields.
- Ability to conduct independent, original research.
- Willingness to contribute collegially to the intellectual life of the research group.
- English proficiency required; familiarity with Italian and/or German preferred.
- Preference for projects spanning traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute an original research project aligned with the Group’s research agenda.
- Participate actively in the group’s activities and publications.
- Plan and organize seminars, workshops, visits, and field trips.
- Produce a research output during the fellowship (e.g., publication, seminar, site visit, or collaboration).
