Associate Conservator – Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project

The The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is seeking an Assistant/Associate Conservator to join the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project team, supporting preparations for the opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi in the Saadiyat Cultural District. This full-time, on-site position is based in Abu Dhabi and forms part of a collaborative international project developed in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi.

Reporting to the Senior Conservator, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project (based in New York), the role supports conservation, collection care, and exhibition planning for the future museum’s permanent collection, commissions, and inaugural temporary exhibitions. The position is open to conservators from all disciplines, with a preference for experience in objects, installations, and contemporary art practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation, documentation, installation, and stewardship of artworks across multiple media, including time-based media and large-scale installations
  • Collaborate with curatorial, registration, exhibition management, design, and operations teams in Abu Dhabi and New York
  • Review exhibition design concepts and schematic drawings from a conservation perspective
  • Assess pre-acquisition condition reports and advise on preservation risks, obsolescence, and requirements
  • Work with artists, estates, foundations, and galleries on exhibition and preservation parameters
  • Create and maintain documentation within the collections management database
  • Advise on best practices for storage, transport, handling, and installation of artworks
  • Participate in planning related to building readiness and the inaugural exhibition programme
  • Travel periodically to New York and other project sites as required

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • MA in Art Conservation or equivalent graduate qualification
  • 2–5 years of post-graduate conservation experience in a museum or comparable institutional context
  • Familiarity with modern and contemporary artists’ materials and installation-based practices
  • Strong collaborative, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, evolving project environment
