The Gropius Bau is one of the most renowned exhibition venues in Europe. As an internationally networked exhibition house without its own collection, it presents not only classical exhibitions but also experimental and cross-genre formats.
The Stiftung Brandenburger Tor, based in the Max Liebermann House, is a cultural foundation of the Berliner Sparkasse. It is dedicated to promoting freedom and tolerance, inspired by the Brandenburg Gate as a symbol of unity and renewal between East and West. From this, the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor derives its mission to highlight, strengthen, and enable participation in the importance of culture for our civil society. It is dedicated to aesthetic education, organizes exhibitions, and initiates cultural debates. The Stiftung Brandenburger Tor aims to strengthen democracy through culture.
For their new partnership, the Gropius Bau and the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor are jointly seeking, as of 01 April 2026, a well-structured individual for the position of:
Curator (Gropius Bau) (70%)
Executive Board Member (in particular Head of Exhibitions)
(Stiftung Brandenburger Tor) (30%)
The position is initially limited until 31 March 2031.
In addition to responsibilities for each institution, this role is particularly intended to strengthen programmatic exchange and synergies between the two organizations. The tasks include the following components:
Your responsibilities at the Gropius Bau – shaping, contributing, and participating
- Planning, conceptualization, and implementation of exhibitions and events in line with the institution’s vision
- Scholarly development of a holistic mediation strategy and project management of outreach and educational activities at the Gropius Bau
- Further development and responsible management of the long-term project BAUBAU: A Play Space for Children
- Development of cross-institutional exhibition and event formats within the cooperation between the Gropius Bau and the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor
- Scholarly conception and responsible management of outreach activities and (non-)visitor research
- Planning, management, and responsibility for project budgets (procurement of services, contract management, budget controlling)
- Actively initiating processes related to inclusion and diversity within the programmatic and organizational structures of the Gropius Bau
Your responsibilities at the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor – enabling, strengthening, making an impact
- Joint executive management of the foundation together with the other board members, for the benefit of the entire foundation
- External representation of the foundation
- Collaboration with the foundation’s governing bodies
- Expansion of the network of partners and sponsors
- Full departmental responsibility for exhibitions, including budget planning
- Content-related and conceptual co-design of the planning, conception, and implementation of exhibitions and events in line with the institution’s vision, in the sense of artistic leadership
- Active shaping of the collaboration within the cooperation between the Gropius Bau and the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor
Our requirements – what you bring
- Completed academic university degree in Curatorial Studies, Cultural Studies, Art History, Art Education, Cultural Education, or similar fields, or equivalent knowledge and experience
- Excellent networking within the Berlin cultural scene
- Active engagement with current discourses in contemporary art as well as discussions on mediation and outreach approaches, with particular sensitivity to the needs of a non-profit cultural institution as well as artists and local communities
- Several years of experience in a leadership role in art, cultural, and/or educational institutions in Germany or internationally
- Several years of experience in managing project budgets is desirable
- A strong sensitivity to diversity, inclusion, and anti-discrimination issues, as well as an understanding of one’s own positionality in the workplace, is required; theoretical knowledge and practical experience in implementing current diversity and inclusion discourses in mediation and team leadership are desirable
- A highly structured, proactive working style and excellent communication skills
- Confident use of MS Office
- Language proficiency according to the CEFR in German (C1) and English (C1)
- Knowledge of the foundation sector would be an advantage
