The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut, one of the institutes of the Max Planck Society, invites applications for a Predoctoral Position within the transdisciplinary research project The Art of AI. Rethinking Notions of Creativity, Aesthetics and Ethics.
The project is led by Hana Gründler and Rafael Brundo Uriarte and examines how artificial intelligence transforms concepts of creativity, aesthetics, and ethics across historical and contemporary contexts. The research combines art history, philosophy, media theory, and computer science, addressing topics ranging from automata and early AI imaginaries to deepfakes, AI-assisted artistic production, and shifting notions of intelligence.
Project Scope
The doctoral fellow will develop an original PhD dissertation directly connected to the project’s core questions, engaging critically with the cultural, epistemic, aesthetic, ethical, and political dimensions of AI. The position is embedded in a highly international and transdisciplinary research environment.
Responsibilities
- Develop and complete an original doctoral dissertation related to The Art of AI.
- Actively contribute to project reading groups and ongoing discussions.
- Co-organise and participate in three international workshops.
- Conduct AI-based studies of narratives related to artificial intelligence.
- Collaborate with the principal investigators on a planned art exhibition.
Profile
Applicants should demonstrate strong transdisciplinary engagement with one or more of the following fields:
- Art history or visual culture
- Philosophy (especially aesthetics, ethics, or philosophy of mind)
- Computer science, artificial intelligence, or digital humanities
- Media studies, literature, or cultural studies
Candidates combining expertise across multiple fields are especially encouraged to apply. A strong interest in AI’s cultural, ethical, and aesthetic implications is essential.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
- Enrolment as a doctoral student at any university worldwide (advanced-stage candidates welcome).
- Capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a transdisciplinary setting.
- Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills.
- Excellent English; knowledge of German and/or Italian is an advantage.
