The Städtische Museen Jena are seeking a Curator for the Kunstsammlung Jena. The position focuses on the strategic development of the collection and exhibition programme, including overseeing a planned relocation to an interim venue.

The Kunstsammlung Jena holds approximately 12,000 works spanning painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, and sculpture, with strengths in 20th- and 21st-century art.

Key Responsibilities

  • Further develop and refine the profile of the Kunstsammlung Jena in collaboration with museum leadership
  • Develop and implement a concept for the collection’s relocation to an interim space
  • Conceive, plan, and deliver exhibitions, publications, and related formats
  • Contribute conceptually to cross-departmental projects (e.g. Lange Nacht der Museen Jena)
  • Provide content guidance for marketing and public communications
  • Maintain and expand networks with collectors and funding bodies
  • Secure third-party funding in coordination with museum leadership
  • Initiate and manage digitisation and provenance research projects
  • Supervise assigned staff, volunteers, and interns

Candidate Profile

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Art History, Art Studies, or a related humanities discipline
  • Several years of relevant professional experience with responsibility for museum or collection holdings
  • Strong expertise in 20th- and 21st-century art
  • Experience in conceiving and delivering national and international exhibitions
  • Knowledge of the art market and established professional networks
  • Experience with administrative processes and procurement procedures
  • German language proficiency at C1 level (minimum) and strong English skills
  • Scientific museum traineeship (Volontariat) desirable
  • Driving license (Class B) desirable
