Metro Arts is Seeking a Curator

Contract: Fixed-term, 1 year (with possibility of renewal)
Hours: Part-time, 0.6 FTE
Salary: AUD 70,000–80,000 pro rata + superannuation
Start Date: Mid-May 2026 (ideal)
Location: West End, Brisbane, Queensland (with some work at Norman Park)
Deadline: April 6, 2026 (10:00am AEST)

Metro Arts is seeking a Curator to support the design and delivery of its annual exhibition programme. Reporting to the CEO, the Curator works closely with artists, freelance curators, and partner organisations to deliver exhibitions, public programmes, and residencies aligned with Metro Arts’ vision for contemporary and experimental practice.

The organisation is currently undertaking a strategic transformation in preparation for its 50th anniversary and Brisbane’s Cultural Olympiad leading into the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Key Responsibilities

Curatorial Exhibitions

  • Curate and project manage a year-round exhibitions programme
  • Collaborate with artists and external curators to deliver exhibitions on scope, timeline, and budget
  • Act as Project Manager on selected externally led exhibitions
  • Represent Metro Arts within the visual arts sector

Public Programmes

  • Design and deliver public activities supporting artistic practice and audience development
  • Collaborate across teams to align programmes with organisational goals

Residencies

  • Coordinate and support the residency programme
  • Facilitate studio visits and sector engagement opportunities
  • Contribute to long-term exhibition and programme planning

Artist Development

  • Support artists in clarifying goals, project plans, and funding strategies
  • Assist with grant applications and reporting
  • Strengthen artist visibility and sector profile

Project Management & Operations

  • Oversee exhibition installations and WHS compliance
  • Manage delivery budgets
  • Supervise freelance technicians and interns when required
  • Maintain gallery standards

Partnerships & Fundraising

  • Contribute to fundraising and grant writing
  • Maintain stakeholder and donor relationships
  • Coordinate evaluation processes

Candidate Profile

Essential

  • Degree-level education or equivalent experience
  • Minimum five years’ experience as a curator
  • Strong networks in the Queensland and national arts sector
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborative working style
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Desirable

  • Experience in the small-to-medium arts sector
  • Fundraising and stakeholder engagement experience

Working Conditions

  • 5 weeks annual leave (pro rata)
  • Hybrid option: work from home one day per fortnight (after probation)
  • Some evening and weekend work required
  • On-site parking available by negotiation
