Contract: Full-time
Salary: £26,772 per annum
Hours: 37 hours per week

Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is recruiting an Assistant Curator to support the research, development, and delivery of exhibitions, creative projects, residencies, and its Artists Development Programme. Working within the Programme department (curatorial, learning, engagement, production, and technical teams), the post holder will contribute to the realisation of exhibitions and public programmes to the highest professional standards and within budget.
Founded in 2002, Baltic is the largest UK gallery without a permanent collection, presenting twelve annual commissions and welcoming over 400,000 visitors per year.
Key Responsibilities
Curatorial & Exhibition Development
- Contribute to the research, development, and management of exhibitions and creative projects
- Assist or occasionally lead projects under supervision
- Collaborate with artists, guest curators, and external institutions
- Negotiate loans and liaise with artists
- Maintain exhibition checklists and management systems
- Develop floor plans and oversee installation processes
Project & Budget Management
- Assist with packing, transport, shipping, and insurance of artworks
- Support budget preparation and monitoring
- Contribute to funding applications
- Maintain accurate data and financial records
Interpretation & Public Programme
- Write and edit catalogues, press releases, labels, and panels
- Coordinate documentation of exhibitions and events
- Deliver exhibition talks and tours as required
- Support conferences, events, and previews
Administration & Communication
- Organise cross-departmental meetings
- Book travel and accommodation for artists
- Handle general enquiries and visitor comments
- Coordinate communication with tour venues
- Minute meetings as required

Person Specification
- Degree in a relevant subject (preferably art history) or equivalent experience
- Broad knowledge of contemporary art and related debates
- Experience (paid or voluntary) in museums or galleries
- Experience organising exhibitions and working with artists
- Strong organisational and administrative skills
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Ability to manage deadlines and work collaboratively
- IT proficiency (Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite)
- Experience in financial administration
