Contract: Full-time, Exempt
Salary: $120,440–$163,200 per year
The MIT Museum is seeking a Director of Exhibitions to join the Museum Leadership Team. This senior role oversees the planning, design, production, and evaluation of all exhibitions—including permanent, temporary, and traveling shows—across the Museum’s multiple locations. The Director leads interdisciplinary teams and collaborates with curatorial, education, collections, marketing, and communications staff to create inclusive, visitor-centered experiences aligned with the Museum’s mission.
Responsibilities
- Develop long-term exhibition strategies aligned with the Museum’s strategic plan
- Plan annual exhibition schedules and budgets, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget
- Oversee exhibition design, multimedia, and interactive installations
- Manage project timelines, quality assurance, and interdisciplinary teams
- Collaborate with curatorial, education, collections, marketing, and communications departments
- Support traveling exhibitions, external loans, and external consultants/contractors
- Assist with exhibition fundraising, documentation, and professional representation
- Evaluate exhibitions using visitor feedback and analytics
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in design or a related field
- Minimum 10 years of exhibition experience in museums, galleries, or theater
- Expertise in exhibition design, multimedia/interactive installations, and museum display practices
- Strong leadership, project management, budgeting, and communication skills
- Ability to collaborate across departments and engage complex scientific and technological topics
- Willingness to work occasional evenings/weekends; ~10% travel
