The Baltimore Museum of Art is seeking a visionary Associate Curator / Curator and Department Head of European Painting and Sculpture to lead a globally oriented and socio-historically grounded curatorial programme. This role focuses on rethinking European art history through the lens of colonialism, global exchange, and transnational connections, fostering a more inclusive and polyvocal narrative.
The successful candidate will specialize in European art from the 15th to 19th centuries and will play a key role in reinterpreting the museum’s collection, including major gallery reinstallations, exhibitions, and research initiatives. Working collaboratively across departments, the curator will challenge traditional art historical boundaries and develop innovative interpretive strategies.
Key Responsibilities

Develop exhibitions and collection displays situating European art within global and colonial contexts

Lead reinstallation of European galleries, including the Jacobs Wing

Conduct scholarly research, cataloguing, and provenance studies

Produce publications and contribute to museum scholarship

Oversee departmental staff, interns, and fellows

Manage acquisitions and liaise with accessions committees

Engage with donors, collectors, and institutional partners

Deliver public programmes, lectures, and educational initiatives

Build partnerships with academic institutions such as Johns Hopkins University and MICA
Eligibility Criteria

MA in Art History required; PhD preferred

3–5 years of curatorial experience in European art

Proven expertise in 15th–19th century European painting and sculpture

Strong publication and research track record

Experience in project and budget management
