Sotheby’s is seeking a Senior Researcher to join its Old Master Paintings department in New York. This role focuses on high-level research, cataloguing, and client-facing activities across both auction and private sales. The position involves close collaboration with international colleagues and contributes to the sourcing and evaluation of artworks within the Old Masters market.
The Senior Researcher will play a key role in producing scholarly cataloguing, managing research workflows, and supporting sales processes. The position combines academic expertise with market awareness and client interaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research, photography coordination, and condition reporting for sales
- Produce and edit high-level catalogue entries
- Support and mentor junior specialists
- Assist in sourcing artworks, including travel and client visits
- Collaborate with global Old Masters teams
- Prepare proposals and valuations (e.g., insurance)
- Contribute to private sales and client relationship management
- Ensure compliance with corporate governance standards
Candidate Profile
- Advanced knowledge of Old Master Paintings (restitution knowledge is a plus)
- MA or PhD in a relevant field preferred
- Strong research and archival skills
- Excellent communication and client service abilities
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Willingness to travel internationally
- High level of professionalism and attention to detail
