Brooklyn College (CUNY) is seeking a Curator / Art Gallery Manager to lead its campus art gallery. This role combines curatorial vision with operational and administrative management, overseeing exhibitions, public programming, and the daily functioning of the gallery as a key cultural hub for students, artists, and the wider Brooklyn community.
The Curator / Art Gallery Manager is responsible for shaping the gallery’s artistic programme while managing its operations, staff, and resources. The role bridges curatorial practice, education, and institutional management, supporting both academic objectives and public engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a two-year exhibition and public programming plan
- Curate and oversee exhibitions, including MFA and BFA thesis shows
- Manage all aspects of exhibition production (budgets, logistics, installation, loans)
- Produce interpretive materials, catalogues, and gallery texts
- Lead outreach and marketing strategies in collaboration with internal and external partners
- Maintain artwork records, documentation, and catalogues
- Oversee gallery operations, staffing, scheduling, and workflows
- Supervise interns, students, and external contractors
- Coordinate with internal departments (facilities, IT, security, etc.)
- Secure funding through grants and partnerships
- Ensure safety, security, and maintenance of the gallery space
- Manage administrative duties including meetings, newsletters, and reporting
Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree with at least six years of relevant experience (required)
- Advanced degree in Curatorial Practice, Art History, or related field preferred (MA, MFA, or PhD)
- Strong experience in curating and managing exhibitions
- Expertise in running a gallery, museum, or non-profit space preferred
- Experience with budgeting, fundraising, and institutional collaboration
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and teams simultaneously
