
Curator and Exhibition Manager

Contract: Full-time (4 days per week)
Schedule: 4 days/week + occasional evenings and weekends
Reports to: Executive Director
Salary: $60,000/year + $600 monthly health stipend + 401(k) matching up to 4%
Art League Houston is a contemporary arts organization dedicated to connecting communities through exhibitions, education, and public programming centered on contemporary visual art.
The Curator and Exhibition Manager plays a central role in shaping the institution’s exhibition programme, overseeing curatorial development, production logistics, and cross-departmental coordination across exhibitions, installations, and public programming.
About the Role
This position combines curatorial responsibility with full exhibition management oversight, including installation coordination, budgeting, artist relations, and production management.
The role is highly operational and fast-paced, requiring the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects while maintaining strong communication between artists, staff, and external partners.
Responsibilities
- Manage all exhibition and special project logistics from planning to installation
- Coordinate artwork handling, shipping, transport, and installation processes
- Develop and maintain production schedules and annual exhibition calendars
- Manage budgets, forecasts, contracts, and loan agreements
- Oversee artist travel, accommodation, and exhibition-related coordination
- Curate institutional exhibitions including annual Texas Artist of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards
- Collaborate with education and outreach teams on community-focused exhibitions
- Lead exhibition installations, de-installations, and gallery maintenance
- Supervise art handlers and installation teams, including scheduling and coordination
- Oversee gallery lighting, materials, and installation supplies
- Assist with fundraising, grants, donor relations, and reporting
- Support marketing and communications including exhibition materials and campaigns
- Coordinate catalogue production for major institutional publications
- Lead public programming including talks, workshops, and tours
- Manage special events including openings, galas, and fundraising initiatives
- Oversee open calls, artist selection processes, and advisory board liaison work
Candidate Profile
- B.A. or B.F.A. in Art, Art History, or related field (M.A. preferred)
- Minimum 4 years experience in exhibition production or curatorial roles
- Strong background in installation and exhibition logistics
- Excellent organizational, writing, and project management skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and complex workflows
- Experience working with artists, institutions, and cultural partners
- Comfortable with hands-on installation work and physical tasks
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on ladders when needed
- Strong communication and leadership skills in collaborative environments
