#announcement #Appointment #newsSalome Asega has been appointed Deputy Director of Strategy and Innovation at the New Museum, while continuing in her current role as Director of NEW INC, the institution’s incubator for art, design, and technology.
Asega has led NEW INC since 2021, overseeing programmes that support practitioners working across creative technology, design, entrepreneurship, and contemporary culture. In her expanded role, she will help shape strategic initiatives across the museum while continuing to guide the development of NEW INC.
Born in Las Vegas to Ethiopian immigrant parents, Asega holds a BA from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and an MFA in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design. Prior to joining the New Museum, she served as a Technology Fellow in the Ford Foundation’s Creativity and Free Expression programme and co-founded POWRPLNT, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit focused on digital arts education.
Alongside her institutional leadership, Asega is an artist and researcher whose work explores the social and cultural implications of emerging technologies. Her projects have been exhibited internationally, including at Museum of Modern Art, the 11th Shanghai Biennale, and the Munch Museum.
Founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker, the New Museum has long been recognised for its focus on contemporary art and experimentation. The institution moved into its SANAA-designed building on the Bowery in 2007 and recently expanded with a new building designed by OMA, which opened in 2026.
Launched in 2013, NEW INC was the first museum-led incubator of its kind and has become an influential platform for supporting interdisciplinary creative practitioners working at the intersection of art, technology, and entrepreneurship.
