The Bass has announced the appointment of Philippe Vergne as its inaugural Artistic Director and Chief Curator, marking a significant new chapter for the Miami Beach museum as it enters a period of growth and expansion.

Vergne joins The Bass from the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal, where he served as Director for seven years. Widely recognised as one of the leading museum directors and curators of his generation, he brings decades of experience in shaping major contemporary art institutions across Europe and North America.

Throughout his career, Vergne has held leadership positions at some of the most influential contemporary art organisations internationally, including Director of the Dia Art Foundation in New York, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, and Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

Known for his artist-centred approach and commitment to fostering meaningful connections between institutions, artists and audiences, Vergne has overseen ambitious exhibition programmes, institutional transformations and strategic expansions throughout his career.

The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for The Bass, as the museum continues to strengthen its position within Miami Beach’s cultural landscape. According to Executive Director Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Vergne’s vision, leadership and dedication to artists and communities will play a key role in shaping the institution’s future direction.

Vergne is expected to assume the role in October 2026.

Founded in 1964, The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum and is known for its exhibitions, educational programmes and public engagement initiatives that connect contemporary art with diverse local and international audiences.
