The University of Silesia is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for the NCN OPUS 29 research project The Internationalization of Art Historiography in the Polish People’s Republic: The Case of Jan Białostocki. Led by Dr Patricia García-Montón González, the project explores the internationalisation of Polish art historiography during the communist era, with a particular focus on the influential art historian Jan Białostocki. The successful candidate will join the Faculty of Humanities in Katowice for a four-year research appointment.

 

About the Role

 

The selected candidate will conduct research within the discipline of art history while contributing to the objectives of the NCN-funded project. The role combines independent scholarly research with collaborative work alongside the Principal Investigator, including publication development, academic events, and project-related activities.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Conduct research in the field of art history within the framework of the project.
  • Carry out project tasks under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
  • Prepare scholarly publications and contribute to research outputs.
  • Participate in national and international academic activities.
  • Support the organisation of seminars and project-related events.
  • Undertake organisational duties assigned within the project.

 

Eligibility Criteria

 

  • PhD in Art History or a related discipline in arts studies obtained no more than 12 years before the start of employment.
  • Demonstrated research experience in art history.
  • Excellent knowledge of Polish art historiography.
  • Strong publication record in art history, indexed in Scopus or Web of Science.
  • Evidence of international academic activity, such as research stays, conference participation, collaborative publications, or international research initiatives.
  • Good command of Polish and English.
  • Reading knowledge of French and/or German sufficient for working with source materials.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of twentieth-century art historiography.
  • Experience applying for externally funded research projects.
  • Skills in historical and archival research methodologies.

Applicants must also meet NCN postdoctoral eligibility requirements, including obtaining their doctoral degree at an institution other than the University of Silesia or completing a documented postdoctoral fellowship of at least ten continuous months at another institution abroad.

 

Employment Conditions

 

  • Full-time employment based at the University of Silesia as the primary workplace.
  • Fixed-term contract within the duration of the project, up to 48 months.
  • Expected start date: 1 October 2026.
  • Maximum gross salary of PLN 8,986 per month, including any applicable seniority allowance.
