Museum Berlin-Karlshorst is seeking a Research Associate / Curator to join its scientific team and contribute to the ongoing revision of the museum’s permanent exhibition. Located at the historic site where the German Wehrmacht signed its surrender on 8 May 1945, the museum presents a multi-perspective account of the German-Soviet War of 1941–1945 and its historical legacy.

In light of Russia’s war against Ukraine and its impact on international memory-culture cooperation, the museum is undertaking a process of critical reflection and targeted updates to its permanent exhibition. The successful candidate will contribute historical expertise and curatorial experience to support this work.

The position is particularly suited to historians and curators specialising in the Second World War, Eastern and East-Central Europe, post-war history, and memory cultures. Working within a seven-person team, the successful candidate will contribute to exhibition development, research, content production, and project coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the conceptual and content-related development of the permanent exhibition.
  • Research, develop, and implement exhibition updates and additions.
  • Conduct historical research and prepare exhibition texts.
  • Coordinate project activities within a seven-member team.
  • Liaise with internal and external partners.
  • Support the museum’s ongoing work on public history and memory culture.

Requirements

  • Completed university degree in History or a closely related discipline with a strong historical focus.
  • Demonstrated experience curating historical exhibitions.
  • Strong knowledge of the history of the Second World War in Europe, particularly Eastern and East-Central Europe.
  • Knowledge of post-war European history.
  • Excellent understanding of memory-culture debates in Western and Eastern Europe, ideally with a focus on the post-Soviet region.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills.
  • Excellent English language skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of Russian or Ukrainian.

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness to engage with additional East-Central European languages.
  • Ability to work effectively within an international team.
  • Strong communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to collaborative projects.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional evening work and multi-day research trips, particularly within Eastern Europe.
  • Confident use of digital tools and technical equipment.

Application Process

The position is expected to begin on 1 September 2026. Interviews are expected to take place during calendar week 30 of 2026.

Applications should include the usual supporting documents and must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file (maximum 8 MB) by 12 July 2026 to morre@museum-karlshorst.de.
