Grizedale Art is Seeking as Assistant Curator (Full-time or part-time)

Application deadline: 19th July 2026
Salary: £30k pro rata
Location: Lake District, UK (with national and international travel opportunities)

Grizedale Arts is seeking a new member of staff to work across curatorial support and project production. The role will primarily contribute to the Ampersand Foundation Award projects, with the research and development of commissioned works for the Lake District, contributing to a major survey show and publication on the lost histories of rural culture and their impact on non-rural cultural landscapes. The research has a strong focus on women protagonists and LGBTQ+ communities (in particular in the Lake District and Germany), leading to a publication and exhibition that explores the conjoined history from the Romantic movement through the Arts & Crafts to ‘useful art’ and integrated practice.

The role will be varied, with both desk research and project production aspects, and exciting supported opportunities for national and international travel.

More detailed project information can be found here.

What They Are Looking For

This is a role for a confident and highly-motivated individual, with good problem-solving and people skills, as well as a respect for and interest in the ethos and achievements of Grizedale Arts. Applicants should be able to evidence research outcomes and knowledge of and interest in European rural contexts, cultural histories and contemporary art practice. Proven exhibition and public art commission delivery experience would be an advantage, as is a hands-on practice in art, making or craft. Good organisational skills are important, as is excellent written and verbal English language communication.

Key Responsibilities

The role’s main activities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Supporting Grizedale Arts Director Adam Sutherland and other project contributors in research, preparation, delivery, production, installation and maintenance of the varied commissioned projects
  • Assisting The Farmer’s Arms Programme Manager to ensure that commissions are represented and interpreted appropriately locally – i.e. talks programme, open days etc.
  • Supporting the Programme Manager to ensure artworks and events are made as accessible as possible
  • Supporting media and marketing communications, providing accurate and engaging content
  • Being a point of contact for artists, liaising with arts institutions, funders and other key stakeholders regularly
  • Assisting with accommodation, travel arrangements and hosting for visiting artists and project participants
  • Convening, attending and recording meetings
  • Organising and attending site visits and research trips
  • Monitoring and maintaining budgets for projects efficiently. This includes obtaining estimates, processing invoices, maintaining digital and physical budget files and providing updates to the Programme Manager
  • Drafting, filing and administering service contracts with artists, suppliers, contractors, participants, and sites
  • Supporting with copy-editing and sign-off processes for artist information and project interpretation
  • Providing up to date information, including research reports, budgets or project proposals, to enable colleagues to identify funding streams and partnership opportunities
  • Supporting the writing of project risk assessments where needed, and ensuring that health and safety and safeguarding procedures are implemented
