Kunsthalle Graubünden is Seeking an Artistic Director (50-70%)

Application deadline: 2 August 2026

With the Kunsthalle Graubünden, a new non-commercial venue for contemporary art will be established in Chur from the end of 2026. It sees itself as a platform for emerging artists and a space for artistic and curatorial experimentation. It responds agilely to relevant contemporary issues. Rooted in the Alpine region, the Kunsthalle Graubünden embraces the site-specific challenge of thinking about art innovatively in the context of Graubünden and the Alpine region, while reflecting on its own position and connecting to global discourses. The goal is to test polyphonic approaches through ambitious exhibitions by artists from Graubünden, Switzerland, and internationally, and to understand audience and mediation aspects as integral parts of the curatorial concept.

Do you have a vision and want to shape the Kunsthalle Graubünden with your ideas? For the artistic direction, we are looking for a curator, a collective, or a curatorial team starting March 1, 2027 (or by agreement) for a period of 4 years.

We are looking for

  • An independent, open, and communicative person with a hands-on mentality
  • Proven professional experience in curating contemporary art (including supervision of artistic new productions, project management, and budget responsibility)
  • Very good knowledge of the Graubünden and Swiss art scene, as well as a Switzerland-wide network
  • Excellent editorial skills in German and English (knowledge of other cantonal and national languages is an advantage)

Your tasks

  • Overall responsibility for the exhibition program of the Kunsthalle Graubünden (3–4 exhibitions per year with accompanying event program)
  • Text work, public speaking, mediation/education
  • Shared responsibility for fundraising and the budget
  • Administrative tasks
  • Networking with artists, institutions, supporters, and audiences

What we offer

  • The opportunity to help shape the profile of a newly founded institution
  • Autonomy and creative freedom to implement ideas
  • Straightforward collaboration with a committed board
  • Central workplace in Chur’s Old Town (home office possible by arrangement)
