About the Residency
Fitzrovia Chapel is inviting applications for its Curator-in-Residence 2028 programme. This opportunity is aimed at an experienced independent curator who will develop and deliver the Chapel’s annual exhibition programme, building on its reputation as a cultural space dedicated to creative health, wellbeing, heritage, and community engagement.
Located in the heart of London’s Fitzrovia district, the Grade II* listed chapel has established an ambitious artistic programme that brings together contemporary art, historical reflection, and public participation. The selected curator will work closely with the chapel’s team to create exhibitions that strengthen its identity as a welcoming and inclusive cultural venue while expanding its impact within the local community and the wider UK arts sector.
The exhibition programme is fully funded, allowing the curator to focus on research, artist selection, exhibition development, and public engagement without the need to secure additional fundraising.
Key Responsibilities
- Curate and deliver the complete 2028 exhibition programme.
- Develop three major exhibitions scheduled for early February, April, and October/November 2028.
- Create accompanying interpretation materials and public engagement activities.
- Select participating artists and artworks.
- Develop exhibition concepts and project timelines in collaboration with the chapel team.
- Oversee exhibition installation and de-installation.
- Work with staff on marketing, communications, and audience development.
- Contribute to the chapel’s long-term cultural vision, focusing on creativity, wellbeing, heritage, and inclusion.
Who Should Apply?
The residency is intended for an established curator with significant experience delivering exhibitions and public programmes. Applicants should demonstrate a strong curatorial profile within the UK contemporary art sector and possess an active network of artists, institutions, and cultural partners.
The successful candidate will be able to develop ambitious exhibition concepts while engaging diverse audiences through accessible and meaningful programming.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience curating exhibitions and cultural programmes.
- Strong professional profile within the UK arts sector.
- Experience managing exhibition development from concept to installation.
- Excellent project planning and organisational skills.
- Ability to collaborate with artists, cultural organisations, and community partners.
- Interest in creative health, wellbeing, heritage, and socially engaged artistic practice.
- Experience developing interpretation and public programming is desirable.
Fee and Support
- Curatorial fee of £22,050.
- Additional travel and accommodation budget of £2,625, including research visits.
- Approximately 60 working days based on a daily rate of £367.50.
- Dedicated support from the Fitzrovia Chapel team throughout project development and delivery.
- Fully funded exhibition programme with no fundraising responsibilities.
