Studija International Residency Program 2027

Studija Space invites artists, curators, writers, designers, and other cultural practitioners to apply for its 2027 international residency program, Liminalities.

The 2027 residency program explores moments of transition – conditions, experiences, and narratives that exist between one state and another. It focuses on unfolding processes, shifting perspectives, and the possibilities that emerge through change.

Particular attention is given to overlooked, forgotten, or marginalized stories, experiences, and forms of knowledge that exist beyond dominant narratives. The theme invites reflection on subjects that may be considered complex, uncomfortable, ambiguous, or insufficiently explored, yet continue to shape contemporary realities.

Projects may engage with liminality through personal, social, cultural, political, ecological, or historical perspectives. Rather than seeking fixed conclusions, the residency encourages curiosity, experimentation, and openness to uncertainty, recognizing in-between states as spaces of reflection, imagination, and new possibilities.

What We Provide:

• Approximately 80 square metres of studio space with basic equipment and amenities.
• Accommodation for the duration of the residency.
• Curatorial support in developing artistic and/or research projects, including networking opportunities in the Courland region, as well as across Latvia and the Baltic states.
• A welcoming and tranquil working environment.
• Opportunities to engage with the local community in Kuldīga.

 

Please note: Residents are responsible for their travel, daily and material expenses. Studija can support residents in applying for external funding opportunities by providing official invitation letters.

Main Requirements:

For emerging artists:
A minimum of 2 years of professional experience.

For established artists:
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience.

Additional requirements:

• A strong portfolio and a clearly articulated artistic practice.
• A willingness to engage with the residency context, including the history and community of Kuldīga and the Courland region.
• A meaningful connection to the residency’s thematic framework.
