About the Residency

The Inside-Out Art Museum Residency offers artists and cultural practitioners the opportunity to develop their practices within one of Beijing’s leading independent platforms for contemporary art and research.

Combining exhibition-making, critical inquiry and public programming, the museum provides a context for sustained reflection, experimentation and exchange. The programme places particular emphasis on producing knowledge through artistic research.

Residents are encouraged to explore new directions in their practices while engaging with Beijing’s rapidly changing social, cultural and urban realities. Through conversations with artists, curators, researchers and cultural practitioners, participants can access a broad professional network and develop long-term connections within the region.

Programme

Residents are given the time and space to conduct research, develop new work and participate in the intellectual life of the museum.

The residency values experimentation, reflection and dialogue as much as the production of final outcomes. It encourages exchange between residents, local communities and international audiences, with a particular focus on research and critical reflection.

Residents will develop public or semi-public activities in collaboration with the museum’s team. These may include:

• Artist talks and presentations.
• Discussions and lectures.
• Workshops.
• Screenings.
• Reading groups.
• Open studios.
• Publications.
• Other formats appropriate to the resident’s research or project.

The activity should connect the resident’s artistic research or practice with broader social, political and cultural questions.

Cultural Exchange

Dutch and Chinese artists have a long history of collaborating through exhibitions, performances, residencies, festivals and research projects. These exchanges have generated new artistic work and perspectives while fostering lasting professional and personal relationships.

The 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and China will take place in 2027. Under the theme Designing Shared Futures, the coming years offer opportunities for Dutch cultural professionals to engage with China’s cultural landscape, develop collaborative work and address shared challenges through culture.

Supported by the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on Culture, both countries are committed to expanding opportunities for exchange, co-creation and long-term collaboration.

Eligibility

Visual artists, curators and art observers may apply for the residency.

Duos and collaborative partnerships are also eligible, but each participant must submit a separate application.

A duo may consist of:

• Two artists.
• Two curators or art observers.
• An artist and a curator or art observer.
• An established collaboration submitting a joint plan that leads to a shared outcome.

Members of a duo must live and work together in one space throughout the residency.

Residency Period

One three-month working period is available:

1 March–30 May 2027

Inside-Out Art Museum operates a flexible residency model in recognition of residents’ other professional and personal commitments. The exact starting date will be determined by the museum in consultation with the selected resident, beginning within March 2027 and lasting three months.

Applicants should indicate their preferred working period on the application form. The organisers will make every effort to accommodate this preference.

The residency can accommodate one individual resident or one duo.

Funding

The Mondriaan Fund provides:

• €8,478 for an artist.
• €5,622 for a curator or art observer.

The funding is intended to help cover travel, materials and living expenses for one person.

Selected residents are expected to make a 10% personal contribution. The Mondriaan Fund will account for this automatically when calculating the final subsidy, so applicants do not need to take any additional action.

The Mondriaan Fund pays the costs of the studio, accommodation and support provided by Inside-Out Art Museum directly to the host organisation. The accommodation is suitable for duos and collaborative partnerships.

If a duo or collaborative partnership is selected, the total contribution will increase proportionally to support the second participant’s travel and living expenses.

Funding for artists based in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands may be increased to account for higher travel costs. This will be assessed individually.
