The Art Museum at the University of Toronto is seeking a Curatorial Research Assistant to support knowledge creation through curatorial research and exhibition projects. The position offers hands-on experience in an internationally renowned art museum, with opportunities to work alongside museum professionals and develop skills relevant to careers in the arts and cultural sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct multidisciplinary research using primary and secondary sources.
  • Investigate, synthesise and communicate complex information in support of curatorial projects.
  • Work collaboratively with museum professionals and participate in planning meetings and informational interviews.
  • Shadow museum staff to gain insight into different arts and cultural career paths.
  • Communicate research findings clearly and contribute to curatorial and exhibition planning.
  • Participate in mentorship, feedback, mid-placement check-ins and an exit interview.

Requirements

  • Must be a University of Toronto student enrolled in the 2026 Fall and Winter terms and eligible for Work Study.
  • At least one year of volunteer or work experience in a museum or gallery is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent communication and research skills, including public speaking and working with primary and secondary sources.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to think creatively and critically.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Positive, enthusiastic, reliable and willing to learn.
  • Interest in galleries and museums, contemporary art and equity practices.
  • Study in Visual Studies, Curatorial Studies, Art History, Education, Material Culture, Museum Studies or Archival Studies is an asset but not required.
  • No previous art experience is required; relevant training will be provided.
  • Ability to work in person one to two days per week.
