MADA Gallery 2027 Curator-in-Residence

MADA Gallery invites applications for a year-long curator-in-residence programme offering the opportunity to develop and deliver two curated exhibitions. The programme welcomes Australian and international practitioners and encourages speculative, experimental and critical proposals that engage students and explore the relationship between exhibition-making, teaching and research.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and deliver two curated exhibitions across the residency year.
Develop a cohesive exhibition programme in which the two projects relate to and build upon one another.
Consider connections with art, design and architecture departments within the faculty.
Engage MADA students and audiences through exhibitions and proposed public programmes.
Develop exhibition concepts, artist selections, installation plans and budgets.
Seek additional funding where appropriate, with support from MADA Gallery.

Requirements

Open to Australian and international practitioners, including Monash academic and professional staff, current students and alumni.
Proposals should be speculative, propositional and experimental.
Projects should engage with urgent contemporary issues and ideas and/or critically consider exhibition-making, teaching and research.
Proposals should consider MADA’s educational context and connections with art, design and architecture.
Proposals engaging with University priorities such as Climate Change, Geopolitical Security and Wellness are encouraged.
Alternative proposals to the two-exhibition structure may be considered, subject to resources and scheduling.

Application

Applications must be submitted as a single PDF to mada.gallery@monash.edu and should include up to three A4 pages covering the proposed programme, rationale for each exhibition and relationship between the two projects, together with a brief CV.

Applicants should also provide a list of artists or practitioners and proposed works for each exhibition, installation and display plans, an explanation of engagement with MADA audiences and the tertiary education context, proposed public programmes, up to 10 captioned images or relevant audiovisual or web material, and a draft budget including income, expenditure and additional funding.

Applicants will be notified of the decision in October 2026.
