About the fellowship

The Studio Museum in Harlem is accepting applications for the Robert Rauschenberg Curatorial Fellowship, a 12-month position offering a comprehensive introduction to curatorial work.

The opportunity is intended for an early-career professional who has demonstrated a commitment to the museum field, particularly to artists of African descent.

Working under the direction of the Associate Curator, the fellow will support a wide range of curatorial projects, including exhibition research and writing, production and logistical coordination, and the development of workflows and schedules for the museum’s curatorial programme.

The successful applicant will join a cohort of fellows, collaborate with colleagues across the museum and connect with external partners working across different areas of museum practice.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Associate Curator with research and the production of interpretive texts and exhibition-related publications.
• Support exhibition proposals, develop exhibition schedules and help maintain production deadlines.
• Coordinate studio visits and undertake related artist research.
• Provide organisational, administrative and project support for the museum’s exhibitions and collections.
• Contribute research and writing about the museum’s collections and exhibitions for Studio magazine, the museum’s website and its social media platforms.
• Coordinate with departments including Communications and Learning and Engagement to support the museum’s work with artists and the Harlem community.
• Assist with special projects and other duties as required.

Skills and qualifications

Applicants should have:

• A strong background in mid-20th-century and contemporary art by artists of African descent.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud.
• Familiarity with The Museum System (TMS/TMS Collections) and NetX.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• The flexibility to respond to shifting priorities and manage multiple deadlines.

Education and experience

• A bachelor’s degree in art history, museum studies or a related field from an accredited institution.
• Previous experience working in a museum or cultural organisation is preferred.

Working environment

This is a non-exempt position within a fast-paced museum environment. Office locations are wheelchair accessible, with elevators available in the building. Further accessibility accommodations can be discussed.
