About the fellowship

The Guggenheim Fellowship is a mid-career award supporting individuals who have made notable contributions across more than 50 fields within the arts, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and interdisciplinary areas.

Approximately 200 Fellows are selected annually through a rigorous competition assessing applicants’ previous accomplishments and proposed projects. Recent application success rates have averaged approximately 5%.

The 2027 competition is open to applicants from the United States and Canada.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada
  • Be mid-career professionals who have made notable contributions to their field
  • Propose a significant project
  • Demonstrate their ability to complete the proposed work to a high standard
  • Apply individually or as a pair working on the same project

The following are not eligible:

  • Previous recipients of a Guggenheim Fellowship
  • Students currently enrolled in secondary, undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate programmes
  • Organisations, institutions, and established groups

Application timeline

  • Mid-August 2026: Applications open
  • 15 September 2026: Applications due
  • 29 September 2026: Work samples due or postmarked, where applicable
  • 13 October 2026: Reference letters due
  • Late April 2027: Fellows announced

Selection process

The Guggenheim Foundation works with several hundred advisers to assess applications through multiple stages of review. Applications are evaluated according to the merit and originality of the applicant’s previous work and proposed project.

The identities of advisers remain confidential, and the Foundation is unable to provide individual feedback on applications.

The Foundation does not charge an application fee and has no affiliated application consultants or advisers.
