About the Position

Salzburger Kunstverein is seeking a committed, solutions-oriented and communicative professional to lead its technical production and exhibition installation from 1 January 2027.

The position combines long-term technical production planning with the practical delivery of exhibitions and events. It is a central point of contact between the Artistic Director, artists, external production partners and freelance installation teams.

Working Arrangements

The role follows the rhythm of the exhibition programme, with periods of long-term planning alternating with more intensive installation and deinstallation phases.

Greater flexibility is required during installation periods. Additional hours are compensated through a transparent time-off-in-lieu system. Working hours are planned in advance and coordinated with the team.

Technical Production Planning

Responsibilities include:

Planning the technical aspects of exhibitions, generally beginning around six months before opening.
Reviewing and developing the technical requirements of artists and projects.
Creating suitable technical and spatial solutions in close consultation with the Director and participating artists.
Preparing technical schedules and production and installation plans.
Estimating the staffing, time and technical resources required.
Planning and coordinating installation and deinstallation periods.

Exhibition Installation and Technical Delivery

The successful candidate will:

Lead and coordinate exhibition installation and deinstallation.
Assemble and organise suitable freelance installation, technical and production teams according to the scope and requirements of each exhibition.
Brief and supervise installation staff.
Monitor quality and ensure work is completed professionally, safely and on schedule.
Participate actively in installation and deinstallation where required by the project.

Equipment and Procurement

Responsibilities include:

Planning and preparing the technical equipment, materials and display elements required for exhibitions and events.
Organising loan equipment, technical rentals, transportation and external services.
Researching appropriate suppliers, materials and technical solutions.
Requesting and comparing quotes and cost estimates.
Identifying economical, sustainable and high-quality solutions within production budgets.
Coordinating orders, rentals, deliveries and returns.

Technical Infrastructure and Storage

The role includes:

Maintaining and storing technical equipment and display materials appropriately.
Managing and regularly updating the inventory.
Checking the functionality of existing equipment.
Organising repairs and maintenance.
Structuring technical storage and working areas.
Contributing to the continued development of the institution’s technical infrastructure.

Collaboration and Communication

The Head of Technical Production and Exhibition Installation will communicate directly with artists, galleries, lenders and external production partners.

They will work closely with the Director and a small internal team to develop practical solutions and deliver exhibitions to a professional standard.

Requirements

Applicants should have:

Experience in exhibition installation, event technology, theatre technology, art production or a comparable field.
Strong practical knowledge of handling artworks, display systems and different exhibition materials.
Experience with video, audio and projection technology, including projectors, monitors, media players and speakers.
Confidence installing and deinstalling artworks and exhibition elements.
Practical skills and strong spatial and technical awareness.
Knowledge of regional suppliers, rental companies, workshops and technical service providers, or the ability to research them independently.
Experience requesting quotes and developing cost-conscious solutions.
Excellent organisational skills and the ability to oversee two or more production processes simultaneously.
An independent, structured and solutions-oriented approach.
Clear, respectful and reliable communication skills.
An interest in working with artists and within a small, closely collaborating team.
Reliability, resilience and flexibility during intensive production periods.
Good German and English language skills.

A driving licence would be advantageous.
