The New Museum is seeking a dynamic associate-level curator to join its internationally focused Curatorial team as the SAHA Curator in Residence.

The Curator in Residence will collaborate with the Museum Director and curatorial colleagues on the planning and delivery of exhibitions of different scales. They will also contribute specialist knowledge, research and programming related to contemporary art from Türkiye.

Supported by SAHA Association in Istanbul, the two-year position offers an opportunity to gain professional experience within an international contemporary art institution while contributing to its exhibition, publication and public programmes.

Responsibilities

The SAHA Curator in Residence will:

• Coordinate exhibition production and oversee loans from museums, galleries and private lenders;
• Assist curatorial colleagues with exhibitions and the production or loan of artworks;
• Coordinate exhibition delivery with departments including Exhibitions, Education and Finance;
• Communicate with artists, galleries and lenders internationally;
• Act as a liaison with artists and their representatives during the preparation of exhibitions and publications;
• Conduct preliminary exhibition research into international artists, institutions, art spaces and practices;
• Oversee the production of large-scale artworks with artists, fabricators and museum teams;
• Supervise exhibition installations under the direction of the Museum Director or other curators;
• Coordinate artist residencies in the New Museum studio, including travel, accommodation, meetings and programmes;
• Support the Director with administrative and curatorial work;
• Assist with departmental calendars, presentations and schedules;
• Coordinate research and source materials for publications;
• Help produce, edit and manage exhibition catalogues and other publications;
• Write interpretive and promotional materials for press releases, websites, captions, signage and printed materials;
• Review and circulate exhibition proposals;
• Propose, curate or organise small- to medium-scale exhibitions under senior curatorial guidance;
• Participate in discussions and decisions concerning exhibition proposals;
• Support fundraising and grant writing;
• Collaborate with the Development department on stewardship and membership events; and
• Lead tours for public and private groups.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

• A bachelor’s degree in Art History, Curatorial Studies or a related discipline; a master’s degree is preferred;
• At least three to five years of experience delivering museum-quality international exhibitions, performances and publications;
• Extensive experience working with artists, galleries and fabricators on complex projects;
• Detailed knowledge of modern and contemporary art history, contemporary curatorial practice and exhibition histories;
• Extensive knowledge of contemporary artists, galleries and institutions in New York and internationally;
• Specialist knowledge of contemporary Turkish art and culture;
• Fluency in Turkish and English;
• Excellent written, editorial and spoken communication skills;
• Strong organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail;
• The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and manage simultaneous projects and deadlines;
• The ability to work professionally with colleagues and stakeholders from different backgrounds;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite; and
• Eligibility to work in the United States.

Knowledge of SketchUp and additional advanced language skills are desirable. Domestic and international travel may be required.
