Braunschweig University of Art is accepting applications for a 12-month curatorial fellowship offered through its Braunschweig Projects programme.
Each year, the programme awards seven artistic fellowships and one curatorial fellowship on behalf of the state of Lower Saxony.
The Curatorial Fellow will develop and realise the final exhibition of the 2027–2028 Braunschweig Projects programme while pursuing an independent curatorial project connected, ideally, to a museum, collection, academic institution or cultural organisation in Lower Saxony.
About the Fellowship
The fellowship aims to enrich curatorial practice at Braunschweig University of Art by supporting the development and delivery of a curatorial concept for the final exhibition of the Braunschweig Projects programme.
The Curatorial Fellow will participate in the jury meeting selecting the programme’s artistic fellows and subsequently work closely with the selected artists throughout the fellowship period.
Alongside the final exhibition, the Fellow will develop an independent curatorial project. The proposal should address its research, preparation, implementation, budget and communications, as well as any potential educational or accompanying programme.
The Fellow will have access to the university’s professional and academic networks. Collaboration with HBK’s academic and artistic staff, and particularly its students, is strongly encouraged.
A short report outlining the activities undertaken must be submitted at the end of the funding period.
Responsibilities
The Curatorial Fellow will:
- Participate in the jury selecting the 2027–2028 artistic fellows;
- Work closely with the seven selected artists throughout the programme;
- Develop and realise a curatorial concept for the programme’s final exhibition;
- Research and develop an independent curatorial project;
- Identify potential partnerships with museums, collections, academic institutions or cultural organisations in Lower Saxony;
- Prepare the project’s implementation plan, budget and communications;
- Potentially develop an educational or accompanying programme;
- Collaborate with HBK’s academic and artistic staff and students; and
- Submit a short final report at the end of the fellowship.
Eligibility
Applicants must have at least three years of curatorial experience.
The fellowship cannot be awarded to an applicant receiving regular third-party benefits during the funding period, including:
- A salary;
- Another work grant; or
- State funding.
The fellowship holder must spend at least eight months onsite in Braunschweig during HBK’s teaching periods.
Participation in the programme’s Welcome Weeks, taking place from 19–30 April 2027, is mandatory.
Funding and Accommodation
The successful applicant will receive a stipend of €1,600 per month for 12 months, beginning on 1 April 2027.
A rent-free studio apartment designed for one person will be provided in Braunschweig. The apartment will be available from 15 April 2027, and the Fellow will be charged €250 per month towards incidental living costs.
The fellowship will be awarded by the board of Braunschweig University of Art following the recommendation of an expert jury.
