Blacktown Arts is seeking a Curator to develop and deliver exhibitions, artist commissions and visual arts projects reflecting the identity and cultural diversity of Blacktown.

Working closely with the Coordinator Programming, the Curator will manage projects from initial concept through delivery while supporting local artists, audience engagement and the stewardship of the Blacktown City Art Collection.

About the Role

The Curator will deliver exhibitions, workshops, performances and other cultural projects connecting people with local stories, communities and contemporary visual arts.

The successful candidate will coordinate artists, contractors and Council teams while overseeing contracts, budgets, schedules, funding submissions and project reporting.

They will also manage the Blacktown City Art Collection, including its documentation, acquisitions, storage, conservation and restoration.

Responsibilities

The Curator will:

  • Develop and deliver contemporary visual arts exhibitions;
  • Manage visual arts projects from concept through completion;
  • Coordinate artist commissions;
  • Prepare artist and contractor agreements;
  • Manage project budgets and schedules;
  • Work with artists, contractors and Blacktown City Council teams;
  • Deliver workshops, performances and other public programmes;
  • Prepare funding applications and acquittals;
  • Contribute to cultural planning;
  • Develop partnerships with arts and cultural organisations;
  • Support the professional development of local artists;
  • Develop relationships with artists, community members and stakeholders;
  • Contribute to audience development and engagement;
  • Manage the Blacktown City Art Collection;
  • Maintain collection records;
  • Coordinate acquisitions, storage, conservation and restoration; and
  • Balance multiple projects and competing priorities.

Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Professional experience in contemporary visual arts;
  • Experience developing and delivering exhibitions and arts projects;
  • Strong project-management skills;
  • The ability to manage budgets, contracts and schedules;
  • Experience working collaboratively with artists and stakeholders;
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail;
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities;
  • Excellent communication and customer-service skills;
  • An interest in culturally diverse and community-responsive programming; and
  • The ability to work effectively within a Council environment.

The successful candidate will be required to participate in pre-employment alcohol and drug testing. Blacktown City Council also conducts random and cause-based testing during employment.
