Sigg Fellowship for Chinese Art Research at M+

Organisation: M+
Location: Hong Kong
Grant: HKD 200,000 to cover travel, living, insurance and research expenses
Duration: Three to six months attached to M+
Application deadline: 30 November 2026, 11:59 p.m. Hong Kong time (UTC+8)

M+ is accepting applications for the 2026/27 Sigg Fellowship for Chinese Art Research. The fellowship supports new research on Chinese art in dialogue with the M+ Collections and offers researchers time to work with the museum’s curators, library and archives.

This edition examines the relationship between tradition and contemporary Chinese art practice since the 1980s. Proposals might explore ink art, art-historical concepts, the relationship between art and craft, or lesser-studied artists and practices that complicate existing accounts of Chinese contemporary art.

Fellowship activities

The fellow will develop their proposed research project during a three- to six-month attachment to M+. They will have access to the M+ Collections on site and online, consult library and archival materials, share their work through internal presentations and discuss it with museum staff.

The fellowship concludes with a public lecture in Hong Kong and an essay for M+ Magazine of at least 7,500 Chinese characters or 5,000 English words. The HKD 200,000 grant is intended to cover all expenses, including travel, living costs, insurance and research.

Eligibility

Individuals and research groups of any nationality may apply, with no age limit. Applicants need either a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline or an undergraduate degree plus at least three years of relevant professional or academic research experience. Proficiency in spoken and written Chinese or English is required. The fellowship is subject to the successful applicant obtaining a visa for Hong Kong.

Proposals must concern the visual arts and present new research or extend earlier research that has not been published. M+ gives preference to entirely new projects and requires priority to publish the completed research.
