Part-time, 32 hours (4 days) per week, with the possibility of being able to offer a full time position Pro-rata £29,000 to £32,853 per annum dependant on skills and experience
Following a Curatorial Staff Review an opportunity for a new role has emerged within the Curatorial team. This new post offers an exciting opportunity to work across the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and will help develop and support numerous collections projects in all periods and media. The post holder will curate a temporary touring exhibition based upon the collections, help to generate interpretation for our permanent displays as part of a major project ‘Inspiring People’ which will redevelop our collections displays, as well as work on temporary displays, Gallery publications and acquisitions documentation.
The post holder will be expected to help generate ideas and approaches for interpretation, research secondary and primary documentation for the production of text for displays and website information, curate temporary displays within the galleries, and help to provide targeted curatorial support to internal and external partners in curating displays from our collections. They will support the acquisitions process by taking minutes for the curatorial offers meeting as well as co-ordination and formulation of text for the Trustees papers. The post holder will also provide targeted curatorial support for projects across the whole department and wider Gallery activity as agreed by the Curatorial Director.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, bring an energetic and creative approach to their work, enjoy working as part of a team, have an excellent track record working in curatorial capacity in museums or galleries and have a very good understanding of British history and biography. More specifically, they will demonstrate their experience of curating displays and exhibitions, an understanding of working in partnership, an excellent understanding of interpretation practice, and provide evidence of written work on or towards relevant art historical publications. They will also demonstrate well-developed interpersonal skills, excellent organisational, research and planning skills and good computer literacy. A degree in Art History/History or Museum Studies and a postgraduate qualification and/or equivalent experience in one particular period covered by the Gallery’s collections are essential for the post.
