CRITICAL STUDIES – NEW MEDIA AND PHOTOGRAPHY

The Department of Photography and Imaging, New York University/Tisch seeks applicants for a full-time tenure track faculty position to teach undergraduate-level courses in critical studies effective September 1, 2016, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Department of Photography & Imaging at Tisch is a four-year BFA program centered on the making and understanding of images. Students explore photo-based imagery as personal and cultural expression. The program offers students both the intensive focus of an arts curriculum while demanding a serious and broad grounding in the liberal arts. It is a diverse department embracing multiple perspectives; the majors work in virtually all modes of analog and digital photo-based image making and multimedia. The department has nine full-time faculty and ten part-time faculty.

The department invites photography and/or art historians and related field scholars to apply for a tenure-track position in the field of New Media, Visual Studies, to be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track). We seek a theorist or art historian whose active research focuses on the study of new media, digital and global studies.

The Department offers a BFA in Photography and Imaging and teaches courses in critical studies. Our required courses include history, theory, critical studies across digital media and other courses in museum studies, and critical contemporary art practices. There are opportunities for scholarly collaborations in the College of Arts and Sciences.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to service in the department, school, and university levels, responsibilities will include: teaching undergraduate critical studies seminars and lecture classes in new media, history, and other courses within the specialization of the successful candidate. Teaching load is five courses per year. Applicants are invited to apply with a broad range of photographic and art history experiences. Expertise in the theory and study of digital media or new media preferred. Duties will include the advisement and supervision of undergraduates.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D., M.A., M.F.A. or equivalent degree and have at least 4 years college-level teaching, or professional recognition in the field. Candidates are expected to have an active career, strong curatorial experience and/or publication record in the expanded definition of contemporary photography studies. Successful candidates will have expertise in all aspects of the field, with a comprehensive knowledge of photographic and new media histories. They will demonstrate a commitment to research and teaching; the ability to teach theory and history and to participate in curricular initiatives including strategic planning for the department. The ability to communicate with undergraduate students on multiple levels is essential.

S/he will work with the Chair and full time faculty on all aspects of the study of undergraduate photography and new media courses in critical studies and advanced history seminars. Faculty members are expected to maintain active professional careers, and participate in departmental and school-wide committees, service, and governance. The candidate will have a commitment and a willingness to guide the department in the field of new media within the context of a university setting.

The candidate is expected to provide vision and direction to the Chair in new media studies.
