Le MAGASIN – National Centre for Contemporary Arts in Grenoble, founded in 1986, has established itself as one of the most important art centres in Europe Its space is 3000m2 large in an industrial building built by Gustave Eiffel and transformed by Patrick Bouchain.“L’Ecole du MAGASIN”, created in 1987, is its curatorial education centre. Located at the heart of the Bouchayer Viallet district, at the entrance of the city, the MAGASIN is surrounded by a dense set of cultural institutions.

Operating as a society (French Statute of 1901), it exercises its missions to broadcast and produce through exhibitions presented in its own dedicated space. The Ministry of Culture and Communication, the City of Grenoble, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, and the Isère Department do provide the MAGASIN with a €1.30 mio. budget. The MAGASIN currently employs 14 employees and is under the supervision of a Board of Administration composed of delegates of the four public partners and of six “qualified” individuals.

Job description
The director will fulfil the following missions:

• Conception and implementation of the artistic, cultural and scientific project, which must fit into the MAGASIN human, material and financial resources.
• Definition and implementation of a mediation strategy towards the public audiences, visitors, scholars and local inhabitants with a particular care of “non captive” audiences
• Development of partnerships with local and international cultural institutions
• Management of the human capital, of the administrative, legal and financial matters as well as active participation and leadership of the institution
• Directorship of the curatorial school (L’Ecole du MAGASIN)

Presence: full time
Expected starting date: April 2016

Required qualifications:

• He/she has excellent knowledge in art history and has curated meaningful exhibitions
• He/she has gathered experience managing a contemporary art institution or major art projects
• He/she is capable of conceiving and implementing an innovative project, both from a an artistic perspective and in relation to the local and regional territories
• He/she demonstrated managerial and organizing capabilities, He/she is entrepreneurial and shows dedication
• He/she has demonstrated his7/her ability to raise public and private funding
• He/she has an inclination towards pedagogic transmission
• He/she speaks at least French and English
• He/she will live in the Grenoble city or surroundings
