The Philadelphia Museum of Art seeks a curatorial assistant to participate in the research and planning for new galleries of American art before 1825, with a projected opening in 2020. The successful candidate will report to the Curator of American Decorative Arts and will assist in researching, evaluating, and cataloguing decorative arts for gallery installation and interpretation as well as on-line publication. This is a four-year, full time position funded by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Work closely with curator of American decorative arts in identifying, examining, and researching early American decorative arts for the installation, including glass, ceramics, silver, and base metals, as well as objects in related departments, such as costume and textiles and European decorative arts
• Create or update catalogue records for American decorative arts
• Create labels and other interpretive materials for the installation
• Work closely with other curators, conservators, registrars, and art handlers
• Travel to research and study objects related to the Museum’s collection
• Participate as an engaged and active member of the American Art department

Position requires a B.A. degree, M.A. preferred, with concentration in art history, American studies, or related field. Prior experience working in a museum setting is desired. Candidates should have experience in and knowledge of American decorative arts and European precedents. We are seeking candidates with proven proficiency in visually assessing art, well-honed writing skills, ability to establishing priorities and developing a work plan to meet deadlines.
