The Vera List Center for Art and Politics (VLC) at The New School seeks a full-time Curatorial Assistant to work 35 hours a week, Monday through Thursday, some hours during evenings and occasionally on weekends.

The Vera List Center is one of the pre-eminent public research organizations on the intersection of artistic and political practices, and develops its program both independently and, at times, in close partnership with various programs at The New School. A pioneer in the field, the center was founded in 1992, and has since developed into a vibrant public platform for exhibitions, conferences, and publications featuring visual and performing artists, scholars and policy makers whose work is deeply invested in the arts and their impact on the political. The center is a founding member of the Curatorial Design Research Lab at Parsons, and supports The New School’s pedagogical mission by offering its own class in curatorial studies, by providing curricular support through its international networks, and by acting as a conduit between visiting artists and scholars and New School faculty and students.

Working closely with the director/curator, the manager of programs and administration, students and interns, the curatorial assistant will be involved in all aspects of curating, organizing, and promoting the Vera List Center’s programs. This entails research, developing curatorial frameworks and organizing public programs, publications, and occasional exhibitions related to the center’s two main initiatives, the biennial curatorial focus theme and the biennial Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics. In particular, the curatorial assistant will be charged with enhancing the impact of the live programs through the center’s website and on-line resource guides.

Responsibilities
Programs
The curatorial assistant will conduct research and assist the director/curator in the development of curatorial projects, including events, seminars, exhibitions, and fellowships around the biennial curatorial focus theme as well as the biennial Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics. Under the supervision and guidance of the director/curator, the curatorial assistant will at times curate his/her own programs to complement conferences and other VLC initiatives. A substantial part of the responsibilities will consist of supporting the VLC Fellows, the prize winner as well as visiting speakers, and the public programs they are engaged in.

Increasingly, the VLC is publishing books, among them a biennial Art and Social Justice Reader linked to the VLC Prize and the biennial book on the curatorial focus theme. The curatorial assistant is expected to support the publication of these books.

Editing & Pedagogy
The curatorial assistant will assist in framing the VLC programs as a publishing initiative, enhancing their impact through the center’s website, marketing and PR efforts, including social media, and the production of occasional publications. At times, this may involve editing website postings for content, curating event-related features for the website, or activating the center’s video program archive. The curatorial assistant will also develop ways to strengthen the pedagogical impact of the VLC initiatives at The New School itself through targeted outreach to faculty and students.

Development
The curatorial assistant will support the fundraising activities of the Vera List Center, i.e. institutional and individual giving, and all associated activities. The curatorial assistant will assist the director/curator in planning, reviewing and tracking various budget expenditures as they relate to grant applications. He/she will assist in the meetings with the center’s Advisory Committee and its Strategic Programming Subcommittee.
