National-Portrait-Gallery

Deadline: April 22, 2016

The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of Western European paintings in the world, with over 2,000 works dating from the Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. Every year, the Gallery also stages an ambitious programme of world-class temporary exhibitions across three different spaces. Featuring a range of loans from international public and private collections, the exhibition programme aims to explore and enhance the permanent collection, to inspire our visitors and to offer them new ways of engaging with paintings.

The Exhibitions department is responsible for the management and delivery of the temporary exhibition programme. Following a period of change within the department, which has included the introduction of a number of new roles, we now seek for the first time an Exhibitions Manager. Key tasks and responsibilities include:

  • To organise and deliver specific projects within the exhibition programme including overall project management and management of loans, from point at which a project goes live through to de-installation including any onward tour
  • Be the key point of contact for specific projects, liaising with a wide range of internal and external colleagues including curators, designers, transport agents, ACE, lenders and colleagues at other venues
  • Effectively manage all contractual negotiations, exhibition budgets and risks associated with each project; schedule and manage the (de-)installation of exhibitions

You will have a degree, or equivalent, in an arts related subject and have experience in organising complex loan exhibitions in a museum or gallery environment. This will include the organisation of exhibitions; budget management; negotiation of loan agreements; procurement and co-ordination of transport services; and arranging and applying for British Government Indemnity and /or commercial insurance.  An effective planner and projects manager you will bring to the role an ability to deliver projects on time, on budget and to all relevant standards. You will also be a team-player with a positive attitude who is able to communicate and collaborate well with others and bring a ‘can-do’ approach to projects.

Interview: likely weeks commencing 16th or 23rd May 2016
