James Cohan

James Cohan Summer Internship

James Cohan is currently seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and detail-oriented full-time intern with a strong sense of professionalism and strong interest in contemporary art.

James Cohan is a contemporary art gallery with locations in Chelsea and the Lower East Side. We are a passionate and artist-centric gallery that works diligently to advocate for the artists we represent in the constantly shifting tide of the contemporary art market. The international roster of artists that we work with work in a range of media and often push passed traditional forms of artistic expression, making for an exciting and dynamic relationship with the gallery.

This intern will be based at our Lower East Side location, but may also occasionally work at our Chelsea location, and will participate in a wide array of projects, working closely with all staff and artists represented.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • General gallery support: front desk assistance (e.g. greeting visitors and fielding phone calls)
  • Research on bibliographic information, exhibition history, and provenance, as necessary
  • Maintenance of registrar and other administrative files
  • Database entry
  • Sales support: preparation of press kits, catalogue mailings
  • Assist with the organization of the image, press, catalogue, and video archives

Qualifications:

  • Must demonstrate initiative, while efficiently managing multiple tasks with varying deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Extensive PC literacy, including Microsoft Office
  • Experience of some capacity in arts administration
  • Knowledge of art database software preferred
  • BA in art history or related is preferred
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team

Currently the gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday 10AM – 6PM. After July 4th, our summer hours are Monday – Friday 10AM-6PM. Occasional evening availability is a plus. The internship starts in late May. A modest stipend is offered.
