SOCO Gallery, a new contemporary art gallery located in Charlotte, North Carolina, is looking for an experienced Gallery Director to join their growing team. This multifaceted leadership role will have a great deal of autonomy, and the ideal candidate will have the opportunity to develop the programming, presence, and profile of the gallery in collaboration with the owner. Must be able to work directly with high-level clients with discretion, as well as manage a staff of two full time associates in addition to contracted designers, preparators, vendors, and artists. The candidate should have established relationships with collectors and institutions, and preferably a history of initiating and closing sales of both primary and secondary market artworks.

Position Requirements:

• Minimum 6 years gallery, museum and/or auction house experience in a key leadership role;
• In-depth knowledge of contemporary art and general art history;
• Experience with every level of gallery operations, including but not limited to invoicing, client relations, production, shipping, insurance, artist relations, contracts, art fair operations, special event hosting, and industry standards for best business practices;
• Cultivate and steward meaningful and collaborative relationships with museums, collectors, artists, journalists, critics, and art fairs;
• Ability to recognize and pursue opportunities for the gallery and artists;
• Willingness to travel and work off-site for art fairs, studio visits and special projects throughout the year;
• Applicants must be mature, self-confident, self-motivated, personable, and possess gracious and strong social skills;
• Proven ability to interact effectively with clients, curators and artists;
• Creative and proactive problem solving abilities;
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
• Advanced Mac proficiency, as well as experience with Gallery Manger or any gallery management program.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Work strategically with the Gallery Manager and Sales Director on daily operations and long-term planning;
• Oversee exhibition, art fair, shipping, commission calendars;
• Community relations and development;
• Research and write press releases;
• Manage art fair preparations;
• Oversee social media, website, and online sales outlets;

This position requires living full time in Charlotte, North Carolina, potentially relocating from another city.
