DePaul Art Museum is seeking a dynamic Assistant Curator to support the needs of its ambitious collection and exhibition program. Reporting directly to the Director/Chief Curator, the Assistant Curator will be responsible for a variety of curatorial and administrative tasks including collection and exhibition research, planning, and installation, writing didactic materials, coordinating publications, and university outreach. The Assistant Curator will have lead responsibility for coordinating exhibition and artist programs, and may periodically have the opportunity to independently curate original exhibitions.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Conduct curatorial research for exhibitions and publications, including studio visits and relationship-building in Chicago.
- Work with artists, collectors, colleagues, and the museum registrar to secure loans and arrange shipping, layout, and installation of artwork.
- Obtains all necessary permissions for images and maintain accurate credit lines.
- Maintain accurate exhibition checklists, image files, funder credit lines, lenders, and other exhibition details; ensure accuracy of information on all CAM publications and website.
- Provide public and private exhibition tours.
- Provide general curatorial support for the Director and guest curators.
- May independently organize original exhibitions of varying size and scope, depending on experience, and work with classes or students to organize collection-based exhibitions.
- Research, write, and present justifications for gifts and purchases.
- Build relations with collectors and donors.
- Compile and disseminate information about the collection to various constituents on campus.
- Act as core hub of information to disseminate museum content to university community and beyond.
- Prepare and edit exhibition descriptions and didactic materials including gallery guides, wall text, labels, website content, and catalogs.
- Work with staff to prepare and edit materials to promote, publicize, and interpret exhibitions and related public programs on and off campus
- Gather and write exhibition-related information pertinent to grant applications, final reports, and other institutional needs.
- Coordinate writing and editing process with DPAM staff in other departments to meet all deadlines.
- Assist Director in preparing communication materials for advisory board or other needs.
- Work with museum staff to plan and coordinate public programs related to exhibitions.
- Work to foster integration of exhibitions into education and outreach programs.
- Work with Admin Assistant all logistical needs for artist/curator visits, including arranging honoraria, travel, lodging, meals, and necessary equipment
- Obtains and oversees copyright permission, ISBN numbers, Library of Congress, and distribution records for publications
- Provide logistical and administrative coordination of exhibitions, including traveling exhibitions.
- Work with Collection and Exhibitions Manager to maintain DPAM’s master exhibition schedule, descriptions, checklists, credit lines.
- Work with Admin Assistant DPAM’s master colleague and artist mailing lists.
- Maintain the museum’s curatorial archives, both in paper and web formats.
- Oversee curatorial interns and volunteers.
- Participate in various fundraising efforts, both specific to exhibition programs and more general museum-wide initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in Art History or related discipline with emphasis on modern and contemporary visual culture.
- 3-5 years curatorial experience, preferably in a museum context.
- Superb verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated art historical research experience and proficiency.
- Demonstrated proficiency with and accuracy in using computer programs, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- A commitment to presenting and interpreting contemporary art to diverse audiences.
