SCAD seeks a qualified curator with extensive knowledge of modern and contemporary art to maximize the outreach and impact of the university’s dynamic exhibitions department.

In this role, you will research and coordinate exhibitions for all SCAD locations and exhibition venues. You will write exhibition summaries, catalogs and marketing texts and gather media materials for publications and docent preparation. In addition to developing exhibition proposals, you will oversee all aspects of the layout and installation of each approved exhibition. This includes effective and professional communication with artists about exhibition spaces, logistics and deadlines, as well as overseeing checklists and itineraries, hosting visiting artists and conducting studio visits.

The ability to cultivate strong relationships with SCAD faculty in various departments is essential to fostering dialogue and creating shared goals for programming. Externally, you will develop and execute community-based and educational programs to complement major exhibitions and network with local arts organizations and media. Additionally, you will present curatorial talks and tours of exhibitions to the SCAD community, patrons and public and conduct class visits as requested. Some travel is required to conduct exhibition research and promote the exhibition program.

The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in standard museum curatorial practices and exhibition development, as well as outstanding skills in research, writing, communication, logistics, programming and project management. A demonstrated national and international network in the contemporary art world is essential, as is the ability to build relationships with artists, other institutions, donors and collectors.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in art history, four to five years’ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of and an interest in performance art, contemporary design or related disciplines preferred
