Job Title: Studio Arts Educator
Department: Museum Experience and Education
Reports to: Manager of Youth Programs

The Studio Arts Educator is responsible for conducting on-site and off-site Studio Art Programs and partnerships that further SJMA’s mission to engage audiences with the art of our time and the vitality of the creative process.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site and off-site Studio Art Programs for diverse youth and adult audiences
  • Promote SJMA Studio Art Programs with local schools, agency administrators, and community leaders
  • Collaborate with Education Department staff in the development and implementation of SJMA Education programs involving a studio art component
  • Design and implement grade-appropriate and standards-based studio art lesson plans
  • Develop Studio Art Programs that connect to current Museum exhibitions while fulfilling clients’ curricular needs and interests
  • Conduct inquiry-based gallery visits and activities for students in grades K-12
  • Participate in required exhibition training sessions and attend informational staff meetings
  • Conduct independent research on artists and artworks in Museum exhibitions and in the Museum’s Permanent Collection
  • Maintain studio art supplies and organization of art materials storage areas

Minimum Qualifications

  • BFA or BA Art Education required. MA, MFA or M.Ed preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years teaching experience required. Previous Museum Education experience preferred
  • Experience working with groups of children and teachers, in school and informal educational settings
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
  • Basic understanding of educational theories or techniques, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), age/grade characteristics, and/or child developmental stages
  • Community contacts a plus
  • Ability to work independently and in small groups
  • Excellent organizational skills with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, with little supervision, and uphold Museum’s policies
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese a plus
  • Creativity and flexibility
