RA

Deadline: September 4, 2016
Interviews to be held week commencing:  September 12, 2016

About the Architecture Programme
The RA is where architecture intersects with the visual arts – a connection embraced by a Department that produces events, projects and exhibitions. The RA’s Architecture Programme is a major strand of this activity and aims to inspire the profession and deepen the public’s understanding of architecture. The Programme has grown over the past 20 years to encompass stimulating debates, lectures, performances and symposia, alongside curated displays, ideas competitions and new commissions. The Programme has developed a reputation for high-quality events that tackle critical themes emerging from architecture’s relationship to culture and society. The Programme is currently reaching audience capacity and attracting increased media attention that we hope to grow as we move towards 2018 with new spaces and opportunities.

About this role
A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Academy’s Architecture Department as the Architecture Programme Curator and take the lead in devising an innovative and thought provoking Programme.   In support of the Head of Architecture the role includes input into the direction and future of the Department and assistance with its other activities.

About you
You will have a solid architecture background, ideally knowledgeable across practice, theory and curation. You will have expertise in contemporary architecture and related issues, with an interest in interdisciplinary practice. You will have extensive experience of curating and implementing events, gained ideally within a prominent organisation. You will be experienced in all aspects of the life-cycle of event programming as well as exhibitions, from idea generation and development, financial viability, through to implementation.

You will be able to identify the pertinent ideas facing architecture today, and make these relevant to a range of audiences through a variety of events, that give breadth and depth to the Architecture Programme. You will be able to demonstrate exceptional research and development skills. You will be able to communicate clearly and effectively about architectural ideas to different audiences, through speech and writing.

Drawing upon established contacts, you will be a skilled networker. You will have experience in developing marketing strategies, and be able to understand the specifics of the audience and market in order to sell out events. You will have experience with multiple online platforms and social media.

Well presented, articulate and confident with a creative flair; you should possess well-honed organisational and communications skills to build effective working relationships with internal colleagues and external stakeholders.

A strong and experienced people manager, you will be able to delegate effectively, supervise junior members of the team, and identify personal development opportunities for the individuals.

You must be available to work some evenings and weekends.

What benefits do we offer?

We offer a very generous pension scheme, contributing up to 10% of your salary into a defined contribution scheme.

On top of 25 days’ holiday and 8 days bank holiday each year, we close between Christmas Eve and New Year, allowing staff additional paid holiday.

Staff are encouraged to attend free History of Art and life drawing classes on site.  We also have a staff choir, running club and craft club. Best of all, we have a reciprocal agreement with many leading museums and art galleries in London and New York, that allow you to enter for free with your staff pass.
