Tate is seeking to appoint the next Director to succeed Nicholas Serota when he steps down in 2017.
Tate is a family of four galleries – Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives which together attract almost 8 million visits annually with over 13 million visits to the Tate website. An internationally renowned institution with a strong commitment to championing art and artists, Tate cares for the national collection of British, modern and contemporary art on behalf of the public, presenting and developing the collection and sharing it as widely as possible.
Leading a great national and international institution, the Director will be accountable for delivering Tate’s mission: to promote the enjoyment and understanding of art. Working closely with Tate’s Chairman and Board of Trustees and leading the senior team and the organisation as a whole, the new Director will develop the vision and strategy which will build on the success of Tate to date, ensuring that it continues to be at the leading edge of best practice as an international art museum in the 21st century.
In the new Director, Tate seeks a well-respected artistic leader with the potential to provide the vision and ambition to Tate which will sustain its brand and national and international reputation for the foreseeable future. A recognised leader with the stature and credibility to nurture and add value to Tate’s senior leadership team and to contribute effectively to the UK’s broader cultural sector, they will combine strong relationships with artists, donors, commercial partners and the art world at large with the ability to represent Tate in the public arena. An inspiring, innovative and inclusive leader, attuned to the opportunities and challenges of the next decade, they will have the confidence and flexibility to capitalise on what has gone before and to position Tate for what is to come.
