Instructor/Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor – Art History (Art of Asia/Pacific Rim) inNew York

The Music and Art Department at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) invites applications for an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position.

The Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) is an integral part of City University of New York system with the largest college enrollment in the system of over 25,000 students. It is strategically located in downtown Manhattan in close proximity to the artistic communities of Tribeca and SoHo, the dynamic downtown financial district, and the center of New York City government at City Hall.

The Music and Art Department is undergoing a process of growth and renewal and would like to attract new faculty that will share and contribute to this process through teaching, research and guidance in area(s) of Art History (Art of Asia/Pacific Rim). The department seeks a candidate with a specialization in Photography with an emphasis in Design to teach courses in photography and digital design, both practical and theoretical. They will share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions for the good of the institution.

The successful candidate is expected to teach in the classroom, research, and provide guidance in area(s) of expertise. Research and publication are expected for tenure and promotion. Other areas of responsibility include curriculum development, participate in departmental and college-wide activities and committees, such as, grant writing, assessment, faculty development, mentoring student projects, and academic advisement. The qualified candidate must be able to work in either the Day or Evening/Weekend program, as needed by the Department.

The department seeks a candidate in the field of Art History whose research area is non-Western art (specialization in art of Asia or the Pacific Rim preferred, others will be considered) to teach a range of existing survey courses in art history including Art History I, Art History II, Modern and Contemporary Art, History of Graphic Design, Pre-Columbian Art of Mesoamerica and the Andes and to develop new courses in their area of expertise. The candidate should have an interest in General Education and in developing curriculum suitable to a two-year program. Participates in department and college activities such as curriculum development, grant writing, assessment, faculty development, and mentoring student projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor: Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Three years college teaching experience preferred. Experience with instructional technology an asset. Curatorial or arts administrative experience is desirable.

For Instructor: Master’s degree in area(s) of expertise and/or active progress toward a Doctorate or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

For Associate or Full Professor, candidate must have a record of significant achievement in field. Ph.D. preferred, but master’s degree with doctoral work in progress may be considered for Instructor. Persons appointed to the Instructor title are only eligible for five annual appointments. Appointment to a professorial title subsequent to service as Instructor will only be considered if the candidate has obtained the qualifications for professorial ranks as stated above.
