Open Call for Emerging Curators

Artspace is reviewing curatorial proposals from emerging curators and professionals in arts-related fields who are interested in mounting a ten-week exhibition at Artspace. The exhibition will be mounted in one if two slots: Winter of 2017 (December 2017 – February 2018) or Winter 2018 (December 2018 – February 2019).  This is the third year we are organizing this exciting opportunity, and interested applicants can review documentation from the 2015 and 2016 winning exhibition proposals hello, world! and I Like the Sound of That .

We seek projects that take risks, look critically at a question or set of questions, and reimagine the form and/or behavior of an exhibition. We prioritize proposals that give consideration to Artspace’s history and position and to the context of New Haven as host community. We welcome proposals that restage a version of a recently presented graduate level thesis show.

The proposals will be reviewed by Artspace’s Curatorial Board and the Artspace staff.  We will provide the winning candidate with a $1,000 fee and an exhibition budget of $4,000.  The exhibition budget must account for all artist fees, crating/shipping, exhibition text, and special equipment. The Artspace staff will help plan, conceptualize, coordinate, install and deinstall and return the show, though the curator should be very involved in these steps and have a pro-active can-do attitude with respect to cultivating local participation in the exhibition (eg via public programs, collaborations, open calls seeking local artists to round out the selected artists, etc).  The curator must commit to being on-site during the installation, opening reception, and de-installation.  Our Executive Director is available to work with Curators in the window between  6-9 months in advance of the exhibition to identify sources of grant funding to supplement the show’s budget.
