Associate Curator

The Associate Curator of Exhibitions is a critical member of the Collections and Exhibitions Department team who will contribute to the planning and implementation of the Museum’s exhibition and programing goals. The position contributes to and provides support for all of the department’s activities including the following: planning the annual schedule of exhibitions, organization of temporary exhibitions, securing traveling exhibitions, traveling Museum-organized exhibitions, securing grants and producing original interpretive content. Other duties include: managing contracts, annual budgets, exhibition installations, production of interpretive materials and graphics for galleries and publications. Additionally, the Associate Curator of Exhibitions will have opportunities to organize original exhibitions and present public programs throughout the year. The Associate Curator of Exhibitions reports to the Chief Curator and works with all departments across the institution.

Specific Tasks:

  1. Manage and distribute accurate and timely information about Department programs, schedules, checklists, content and rights-approved visuals to all staff.
  2. Research and curate original exhibitions focusing on 20th Century and Contemporary Art.
  3. Schedule and prepare materials for varied meetings with staff, board, collection support groups and external partners and coordinate follow up for action items.
  4. Manage logistics and deadlines for preparation of exhibitions and collections programs including supervision of artists, guest curators, designers, photographers, contractors and others.
  5. Provide original written content and/or editing for interpretive materials used in galleries, marketing and publications.
  6. Support planning and implementation of marketing activities and public events related to department programs.
  7. Attend museum and community events as an actively engaged museum representative.
  8. Provide regular gallery tours and talks to the public throughout the year.
  9. Organize several original exhibitions each year related to the permanent collections and other topics relevant to the Museum’s program goals
  10. Coordinate and manage exhibitions traveling to the Museum from other institutions and in-house traveling exhibitions.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Academic and Business Requirements:
Minimum B.A. in Art or Art History, M.A. preferred.  Three or more years of curatorial and project management experience.

Specific Skills and Abilities:
Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Creative thinker and problem solver with the ability to work cooperatively with other staff members, lenders, artists, shippers and vendors. Must be well-organized, work under pressure to meet deadlines, and pay close attention to detail. Typing and competent knowledge of current software, including the Microsoft Suite and collection database(s). Knowledge of Adobe design programs a plus. Ability to effectively use and collaborate on social media platforms.
