Background
Located in the heart of historic Chichester on the south coast, Pallant House Gallery holds one of the most significant collections of modern British art in the UK. At its core is the bequest of Walter Hussey, Dean of Chichester, but subsequent donations have substantially increased the Gallery’s holdings. The Gallery’s celebrated programme of exhibitions, held in both its original 18th century town house and its new wing, designed by Colin St John Wilson, complement the Collection, adding to the Gallery’s reputation as a leading player in the field of modern and contemporary British Art.
Following a major, HLF-funded redevelopment programme, Pallant House Gallery was awarded the Gulbenkian Museum of the Year award in 2007. In 2012 it was awarded a £1 million HLF Catalyst match-funding grant. Since re-opening in 2006, the Gallery has been widely acclaimed for its pioneering Learning and Community Programme, which has inclusion at its heart.
The Gallery’s core values are:
- To maintain and promote the Gallery’s collections through innovative exhibition and learning programmes
- To be a leader in its field through the excellence of its activities
- To be sustainable, socially responsible, and environmentally friendly
- To be inclusive and accessible to a wide audience
